THE WORK BEHIND THE VMS

Who looks after the software after installation?

XProtect is a configurable enterprise VMS with browser and mobile clients, central deployment tools and Care Plus health reports. The difference is who maintains the Windows servers, SQL databases and client versions underneath it.

The server work continues after installation

XProtect needs Windows services, SQL databases, trusted certificates and upgrades. March–May 2026 XProtect G2 reviewers describe setup and configuration effort, while public support threads show hostname and certificate troubleshooting. TetherX manages the cloud platform and brings supported site diagnostics into the same workspace.

New software still needs someone to run it

Milestone’s new Linux containers extend existing XProtect and isolate application updates, and your team or provider still owns the installed environment. TetherX supplies the cloud workspace and validated automatic software rollout, while you retain control of site hardware and supported integrations.

Reviewers find parts of the interface dated

In April and May 2026, two G2 reviewers found parts of the XProtect interface dated, or the client heavy on older PCs, while praising its multi-site monitoring. Test finding evidence, changing a view and diagnosing a site with the people who will use it every day.

AT A GLANCE

Milestone XProtect and TetherX, question by question

The 4 questions an integrator asks on a site walk, answered for both platforms.

Question Milestone XProtect TetherX
Do I need a recorder on site? XProtect runs on customer-managed Windows infrastructure, with recording services, SQL databases and the associated software lifecycle to maintain. TetherX provides recording, viewing, search and monitoring through one system and one app. TetherBox records locally, with optional TetherX cloud recording, so no existing recorder or third-party cloud video service is required. It can also work alongside either where needed.
Which devices you can connect Access control and other systems connect through MIP plugins, which can need their own licences and setup. Milestone lists more than 16,500 supported devices. 1,000+ integrations across 17,000+ device models, plus ONVIF and RTSP sources. Check model-specific recording, analytics and control support.
Where the AI runs Licence and deployment requirements depend on the analytics application: XProtect combines supported camera metadata with selected BriefCam or third-party analytics applications. AI Bridge supports customer Linux/NVIDIA servers and Jetson. Included TetherBox AI runs on the edge, and supported camera and third-party analytics feed the same timeline. Native video, appearance/PPE and counting run on compatible NVIDIA GPU/Jetson or Hailo compute, including Raspberry Pi AI HAT; audio runs locally on the CPU. Each module needs supported models, configuration and a capacity check. Additional modules and retention can cost extra. Optional paid Calipsa cloud verification is also available, and natural language footage search interprets requests in the cloud.
What you actually pay for Care Plus, renewed yearly, provides new-version upgrades and full push notifications in the mobile app; Corporate requires it for year one. At US reseller list prices in October 2026 it costs about 19% of the device licence each year ($33 on a $177 Professional+ device), on top of perpetual base and device licences. Care Premium is extra for direct Milestone support. Extensions such as LPR cost extra, and selected analytics and integrations can add their own licences. An annual platform subscription by channel count, from £100/site/year. TetherBox AI is included; additional modules and retention can cost extra. Cloud recording is optional; specialist analytics and professional monitoring are quoted separately.

FAQ

Questions before you choose

Not directly. Milestone’s storage-resilience article (8 September 2026) says “XProtect cannot use S3 directly without using Surveillance Bridge” (XProtect storage resilience). TetherX records full-rate locally, with first-party cloud backup per camera where you need it.

No. Milestone’s client comparison (14 August 2026) says the Web Client “does not offer the same depth of workspace customization, advanced search or integrated operational tools as Smart Client”, and configuration happens in the separate Management Client (XProtect client comparison). It does offer PTZ and alarm handling. Milestone has said maps will reach the Web Client in 2026; the 2026 R1 Web Client has none. In TetherX, operation and configuration both run in the browser.

Yes. TetherX runs in any modern browser, including Safari, with native iOS and Android apps as well. Asked whether the XProtect Smart Client would come to Mac, Milestone answered: “No. Instead, we’re focusing on adding functionalities to the Web Clients” (XProtect Fundamentals webinar Q&A, 18 September 2025). The Smart Client 2026 R1 requirements list Windows 11 only.

XProtect administrators maintain the selected Windows services, databases, storage, certificates and upgrades. SQL Server Express is included; larger designs may need another SQL edition. Licence and analytics planning also matter when the estate expands. TetherX manages the cloud platform and includes upgrades in its subscription, and TetherBox Bridge provides local recording and supported device diagnostics on the site compute you choose.

New XProtect versions come through Care Plus, on top of perpetual base and device licences; Corporate requires Care Plus for its first year. TetherX has an annual platform subscription priced by channel count, with no separate software-maintenance renewal. Milestone also documents hotfix availability without Care Plus for General Availability versions, and device licences can be reused for camera replacements, with automatic activation available.

With XProtect, your team or service provider deploys the Windows/VMS updates. XProtect’s published guidance describes two or three feature releases a year, with cumulative patches and hotfixes between them. A Milestone developer confirmed a 2026 R1 cumulative fix on 15 June 2026, and its security advisories describe fixes across multiple patch versions. TetherX ships a feature release every month, with smaller compatibility and improvement updates in between, and validated updates install automatically on the platform and TetherBox software. Compare new-feature frequency, urgent fixes and who deploys each component separately; an internal release count is not a security-response SLA.

A full XProtect 2026 R1 upgrade calls for SQL backup, the prescribed management/failover/client/recording-server sequence, compatibility checks and any required restarts. XProtect Update Manager provides a central service, host agents and a client for distributing and installing supported updates; the customer or provider installs and configures that infrastructure, secures and authorises agents, and selects the components and hosts to update. Current Update Manager 1.7 documentation supports deploying Smart Client and Device Pack across hosts and automatically applying queued updates when an offline host returns, and recording-server installation can also run silently and remotely, so XProtect updates do not always require a manual on-site visit or a click on every machine.

These dated accounts describe specific tasks and installations:

  • An integrator working with sites of 25–50 cameras reported corrupt databases after power cuts where customers had no UPS. Recovering the data was complex. Reddit r/Xprotect, October 2026
  • After an XProtect Mobile update, a team could no longer find the PTZ controls to steer its cameras from the app. App Store Australia review, August 2026
  • A manager overseeing several XProtect sites reported "incredibly slow" camera loading in the iOS app, even over local Wi-Fi 7. App Store review, April 2026
  • An integrator handling frequent Milestone patch requests found that some required more specialist IT skills than their usual low-voltage work. Reddit r/lowvoltage, April 2026
  • An integrator was willing to pay Milestone to run the servers: "I hate dealing with AWS and managing servers myself." Reddit r/Xprotect, August 2026

Agree the recording-recovery and support process for either system. The power-loss report concerns Express+ installations without UPS protection. Update Manager can deploy hotfixes centrally, so the patch reports concern who runs the process; they do not show that every update needs a visit.

No. Milestone’s current 2026 R1 Incident Manager guide keeps an incident project available only on the site where it was created, although the project can hold evidence sequences from that site and its child sites. Operators on parent or child sites cannot access that project merely because their footage appears in it. Confirm the proposed case-sharing workflow. This is a specific federated Incident Manager boundary; it does not mean XProtect lacks alarm handling, multi-site monitoring or export.

On XProtect Mobile Server, which the customer or service provider operates: it gives the Web and Mobile clients access and can transcode video. In the documented 2026 R1 Smart Connect configuration, a public IP and Care Plus are required, with UPnP or manual router port mapping. TetherX’s outbound site connection supports remote viewing without inbound port forwarding or a static site IP. XProtect Smart Client, Web Client and Mobile support daily viewing and investigation. The Smart Connect requirement is feature-specific, and not every remote XProtect design exposes the same ports. Agree secure connectivity, certificates and ongoing responsibility with your integrator.

Yes. TetherX supports 1,000+ integrations plus ONVIF and RTSP devices, alongside your alarm panels and access systems. Both platforms support multiple camera brands. Confirm camera models, firmware, recorder access and required features before planning a migration, and match local recording and AI to the proposed deployment.

Yes, if your cameras support parallel streams. Start with TetherBox Bridge at one site, compare the workflows, then move the rest of your estate over in stages. Confirm the camera models, stream capacity, permissions and recording responsibilities before starting.

A typical TetherBox setup takes about 15 minutes.

Flag it in the TetherX operator console for 30 days, 90 days or one year. The recorder must be online to receive the retention instruction, so wait for reconnection before handing over an incident that needs preservation. This is an operator workflow capability; it is neither a promise of unlimited cloud retention nor a feature other security platforms lack.

Trial TetherX on representative sites when the priority is everyday multi-site operation, supported alarms and access, remote diagnostics and flexible recording. Keep the existing platform when its specialist integrations, enterprise workflows or on-prem requirements are central to the project.

Andreas K., a team operations lead, rated XProtect 4.5/5 on 30 April 2026, finding some interface areas dated while praising stable multi-camera and multi-site monitoring. Mikhail I., a surveillance operations manager, also gave 4.5/5 on 8 May 2026, finding the client heavy on older systems and some advanced settings less beginner-friendly while praising practical multi-site navigation. Trial the actual Smart Client, Web Client and Mobile tasks on representative hardware. Both are validated incentivised seller-invited G2 reviews. Neither identifies a software build or measured hardware workload, so they are individual experiences rather than a performance benchmark, a frequency ranking or evidence that a programming toolkit causes poor UX. Other current reviewers praise the interface and support.

No. XProtect launched in 2002 and has changed substantially since then, so judge its current Smart Client, Web Client and Mobile interfaces against your actual tasks. The two G2 reviews above are useful trial prompts; they do not prove that product age or a programming framework causes poor usability. Milestone’s current App Platform modernisation has its own answer below.

Yes, alongside the existing Windows VMS. Milestone’s 13 March 2026 announcement describes a Linux-based XProtect App Platform that runs beside existing XProtect installations, isolating applications so they can be updated without a full system restart. It is in early access, with general availability planned for late 2026, and the announcement does not establish a completed replacement of the installed VMS. It recognises the expertise and coordination involved in integrations and updates. ORBNET Technical Director Justin Butterworth’s firsthand November 2025 summit account welcomes the move from a Windows-centric monolith towards containerised services, while identifying transition and skills work. This comparison concerns who operates the installed servers, databases and integrations; TetherX does not remove the need to maintain site hardware and networks.

This comparison covers Milestone XProtect VMS only: its recording servers, clients, analytics and software lifecycle. Arcules is a separate product and is outside this comparison. Milestone Husky is an optional server appliance that runs XProtect; suitable customer-supplied hardware is also supported.
THE STORY SO FAR

XProtect and TetherX: two operating models

Milestone

Milestone was founded in Denmark in 1998 and launched XProtect in 2002. Canon acquired the business in 2014. XProtect developed around Windows servers and specialist MIP integrations, and its 2026 App Platform adds a Linux application layer beside them.

TetherX

Founded by UK security installers in 2009, TetherX launched in 2011, raised product funding in 2018 and became independent in 2022. In 2026, we launched TetherX AI and expanded into Australia with local support on the ground. With no VC, private-equity or camera-manufacturer owner, customers and installers shape our roadmap.
